A refined and deeply evocative Romanian Orthodox icon depicting the Madonna and Child, executed with remarkable craftsmanship and devotional sensitivity. The composition recalls the revered Kazan Mother of God tradition, with the Virgin’s gentle inclination toward the Christ Child rendered through expressive lines and luminous tones.

This piece was handmade using traditional tempera and gold leaf on a wooden panel prepared with a classical gesso ground. Fine engraved guide lines remain visible beneath the painted surface, a characteristic sign of authentic manual icon-making techniques used by skilled Eastern European workshops of the period. The quality of execution is notably superior, with elegant facial modeling, rich chromatic depth, and beautifully aged gilded surfaces.

Particularly important is the original rear label from the Tulcea Delta cooperative, bearing period socialist-era stamped markings dating to the 1950s. During this historical phase, Romanian religious artworks produced through authorized cooperatives underwent strict artistic selection and were created with exceptional care. Early examples such as this have become increasingly difficult to source today, especially in such well-preserved condition. The difference in quality between these mid-century cooperative icons and later mass-produced examples is immediately apparent to collectors.

An authentic and collectible devotional artwork, ideal for collectors of Eastern Orthodox icons, sacred art, or refined Romanian antiques.
