A Rare Pair of French Antique Amber Glass Candlesticks A rare and highly unusual pair of French antique glass candlesticks in a rich amber / cognac tone, dating to approximately 1845–1855, during the Louis Philippe period, and offered with an attribution to the Baccarat manufactory.
The attribution is based on the form, the substantial weight and thickness of the glass, the character of the hand-finished grinding and polishing, and the overall technical and stylistic vocabulary associated with French glass production of the mid-19th century. Baccarat has a particularly strong historical connection with the Louis Philippe court: the manufacture produced a ceremonial glass commissioned for King Louis-Philippe in 1840, and the celebrated Harcourt service was created shortly afterwards, in 1841.
As with many early French glass pieces from this period, the object is unsigned. It is therefore offered as "attributed to Baccarat" rather than as a definitively signed or documented piece.
CONSTRUCTION & CRAFTSMANSHIP
A particularly important characteristic of this pair is its one-piece construction. Each candlestick is produced from a single substantial piece of glass, subsequently shaped, ground and polished by hand — not assembled from separately manufactured sections.
The undersides show evidence of manual grinding and finishing, including the variation and irregularity expected from individual hand craftsmanship rather than modern mechanical production. This type of workmanship is consistent with early French glass manufacturing, where unsigned pieces were common before the systematic use of modern factory marks.
HISTORICAL CONTEXT
The proposed dating of c. 1845–1855 places the pieces within the reign of King Louis Philippe I (1830–1848) or the immediate transition following his reign. This was an important phase in the development of French luxury glass, during which Baccarat was already producing significant courtly and presentation pieces.
Because the exact model has not been conclusively identified in a surviving Baccarat catalogue or archival record, the attribution should be understood as a considered attribution rather than a definitive signature.
