A beautiful and substantial Chinese blue and white porcelain vase, decorated in a rich, intense cobalt blue with an elaborate continuous floral and scrolling pattern.
The vase has a particularly elegant baluster form, with a tall waisted neck, flared rim and carefully structured decorative borders. The decoration includes stylized floral scrolls, large botanical motifs, ruyi-inspired forms, geometric borders and upright leaf patterns around the neck and base.
The cobalt blue is especially attractive, with a deep and saturated tone that gives the piece a strong visual presence.
The underside bears a six-character Qianlong reign mark in underglaze blue. The mark refers to the Qianlong reign (1736–1795), but, as is well documented in Chinese porcelain, such imperial reign marks were also used on later wares as an homage to earlier imperial production.
Based on its form, decoration, cobalt colouring and overall characteristics, I would conservatively date this vase to approximately 1880–1920, most probably within the late Qing period or the transition toward the early Republic era.
The production is consistent with the great porcelain tradition of Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, one of China’s historic centres of fine porcelain manufacture.
A striking decorative piece for a Chinese art collection, antique porcelain cabinet, or sophisticated interior. Its substantial 32 cm height and unusually strong blue-and-white decoration give it an excellent presence when displayed.
