A Rare Piece of Parisian Haute Couture History — Chanel Mannequin Head, 1930s

An authentic advertising mannequin head (marotte) from the Maison CHANEL, made in Paris during the late 1930s. This display bust was originally commissioned to adorn the windows and salons of prestigious millinery shops and boutiques, showcasing the Maison's creations, cosmetics, or hats.

The design embodies the aesthetic of the French Art Deco era: stylized, elegant facial features and a sculpted short wave hairstyle (the classic à la garçonne cut) that evokes the timeless charm of pre-war Parisian elegance.

MARKINGS & AUTHENTICITY

The piece bears distinct stamped inscriptions that confirm its commercial authenticity:

· "CHANEL" — stamped prominently on the front of the neck, large and clearly visible.

· "PARIS" — stamped prominently on the back of the neck, large and clearly visible.

· A smaller stylized "PARIS" mark — stamped on the upper back, above the large "PARIS" (see photo). This was the standard registered trademark used by leading French mannequin manufacturers of the period, a discreet guarantee of authenticity and origin.

CONDITION & PATINA

· Original "Eggshell" Finish — sealed with a historical coat of egg tempera paint (peinture à l'œuf), used to prevent plaster dust from transferring onto precious fabrics. The light ivory tonal shift is the natural result of nearly a century of oxidation.

· Authentic Wear — a small, charming historical nick on the nose, touched up in-boutique during its period of use. A testament to its real, lived history in the fashion salons of Paris.

· Untouched "As-Found" Condition — preserved exactly as found, with its extraordinary historical patina intact.
