A Rare Late Work by Luciano Ricchetti — "Ritratto di Donna" An original and striking oil painting on board by the illustrious Piacentine painter and sculptor Luciano Ricchetti (Piacenza, 1897–1977). Celebrated in his hometown, where his works are held in prestigious collections including the Galleria d'Arte Moderna Ricci Oddi, Ricchetti is known for his figurative and classical works of the Italian Novecento.
This specific painting, however, is a rare and collectible piece that documents a stylistic transition in the final phase of his career. In his later years, the artist moved away from more academic forms to embrace a decisively more modern, synthetic, and modernist language.
The painting captures the eye with extraordinary expressive force. The brushstrokes are vigorous, loaded with material, and visibly textured (pittura materica).
The female face emerges from a bold chromatic contrast: the background is divided into an upper half of sky blue and a lower band of fire orange/red. The woman's face, with hinted but profound features, is enveloped in grey-blue fields and intense shadows that recall almost expressionist influences. The artist's original signature, "Ricchetti", is clearly legible in block letters in the lower left corner.
