A Rare Early 20th Century Japanese Export Plate — 1910s

This elegant Japanese porcelain plate features a delicate hand-painted scene inspired by traditional Japanese life. Three women in kimono are depicted seated in a peaceful garden landscape, surrounded by blossoming trees, traditional architecture, and distant mountains.

The refined composition reflects the aesthetic sensibility typical of Japanese decorative porcelain produced for export during the early 20th century. The scalloped form of the plate is beautifully enhanced by an ornate gilded rim, with rich gold accents that frame the central scene. Soft pastel tones combined with detailed brushwork create a charming and harmonious decorative piece, perfect for display in a cabinet or on a wall.

THE "NIPPON" MARK — A HISTORICAL DETAIL

On the reverse, the plate bears a round mark reading "Made in Nippon." Historically, the term "Nippon" was used on Japanese export porcelain primarily between 1891 and 1921, when U.S. import regulations required the country of origin to be marked. After 1921, the marking generally changed to "Japan."

This plate dates from the 1910s, a period when the Nippon mark was still in active and authentic use. Based on its style, color palette, and the quality of the hand-painted decoration, it represents a beautiful example of Japanese export porcelain from the decade before the transition to "Japan" marking.
