A beautiful and highly decorative PZH Gouda Art Deco ewer, produced by the renowned Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland (PZH) in Gouda, Netherlands, most probably during the 1920s.
This exceptional ceramic ewer has a striking rounded body rising into a tall, ribbed neck with a softly flared rim and an elegant geometric handle. Its unusual sculptural silhouette is enhanced by an exceptionally rich hand-painted decoration.
The palette is particularly beautiful, combining deep cobalt blue, turquoise, warm brown, coral red, ivory and gold, arranged in a sophisticated composition of stylized botanical and ornamental motifs.
The central decoration features large flowing vegetal forms surrounded by scrolling elements and geometric details, while the neck and lower sections are enriched with coordinated bands and painted ornament. The strong colours and simplified organic forms are characteristic of the highly decorative Dutch Gouda pottery of the Art Deco era.
The underside is especially interesting and retains the original PZH factory markings. At the centre is the characteristic Lazarus Gate (Lazaruspoortje), the emblem associated with Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland. Around the mark are additional handwritten and painted factory references, including a model/series number, decoration identification, the separate letter “B”, and the designations “Gouda” and “Made in Holland.” PZH pieces are known for carrying combinations of model, decor, painter and date codes on their bases.
The original markings are an important part of the character and authenticity of this piece and have been carefully preserved.
PZH was founded in Gouda around 1897–1898 and became one of the leading producers of Dutch art pottery, particularly known for its richly hand-decorated Gouda wares. The factory produced important Art Nouveau and Art Deco ceramics and used individual painter and decoration markings that are still studied by collectors today.
A wonderful collector’s piece for enthusiasts of Dutch Gouda pottery, PZH ceramics, Art Deco design and European decorative arts.
