A beautiful and exceptionally well-preserved vintage REUGE Swiss music box, dating from the 1980s, possibly late 1970s, and preserved in an unusually complete original presentation.
The music box is housed in a high-quality wooden case with a beautiful deep green lacquered finish, enhanced by polished dark edging and elegant brass feet. The combination of the green lacquer, black detailing and brass elements gives this small music box a particularly refined and sophisticated appearance.
The lid features a charming reproduction of the historic John Lewis Childs 1897 Fall Catalogue of Bulbs, Plants & Seeds, with its characteristic decorative tulip composition and the large CHILDS lettering. The original artwork dates to 1897 and provides a wonderful contrast with the Swiss mechanical music box.
The box plays “Tristesse” by Frédéric Chopin, one of the most famous melodies associated with REUGE musical movements.
The original REUGE identification details are preserved. The number 5377 is associated with REUGE examples playing Tristesse, while the original interior label of this particular box also bears the number 6320. Both numbers are retained here as original identifying references exactly as found on the piece.
The mechanical movement itself is marked REUGE MUSIC – SWITZERLAND. It is particularly attractive in construction, with a substantial metal alloy movement and the characteristic precision engineering associated with Swiss REUGE musical mechanisms.
COMPLET ORIGINAL PRESENTATION
One of the most appealing aspects of this example is its exceptionally complete original condition.
