문지방 — The Threshold — Diego Casella, (Born Piacenza 1954)

"There is a white hidden in this egg. It is not immediately visible. But those who cross the threshold will find it."

A hand-modeled maiolica egg, made in 1990 in a single piece. The base is compact, an integral part of the work: a trunk with its knotty branches that embrace and hold the egg. Everything is ceramic, everything is one body.

On the bottom, the signature: Diego Casella 1990. Handwritten, like a secret seal that few will see.

The surface is smooth. It is the colors that tangle. The tones blend like ancient lands:

· A deep green that looks like stone

· A brown that comes from the earth, from roots

· A white that is almost invisible. It is there, hidden in a tangle of balanced colors, but one must search for it.

As often happens with completely handmade ceramics, the surface shows a slight craquelure and small imperfections. These are not flaws. They are characteristics of handmade creation, signs that tell of the artist's hand and the time the work has lived through. Silent witnesses of over thirty years of life.

The egg is tilted, tip downward, at about 45 degrees. It is not falling. It chooses to tilt toward the earth, toward what awaits it. The branches hold it, protect it, keep it.

DIMENSIONS

· Height: 17 cm (6.7 inches)

· Width: 15 cm (5.9 inches)

· Thickness: 5-6 cm (2-2.4 inches)

This egg is a threshold. Those who look at it, if they are ready, are called to cross something. Beyond the smooth surface, beyond the intertwining colors, beyond the form, beyond the small imperfections that make it unique, there is that hidden white. It does not reveal itself to everyone. Only to those who seek. The trunk with branches is memory. It is the earth that holds. The egg is the future, but a future that always returns to the earth. And everything is one body, like life itself. Diego Casella, born in Piacenza in 1954, signed this work in 1990, in a period when he already lived away from the spotlight, far from his hometown, protecting his art. Today his unique pieces return to the light.
